The steppes of Asia—an area unknown to cartographers for centuries—were the site of a series of civilizations that followed one after another from the third century BC to the fifth century AD. For the well-known sedentary civilizations, this period extended roughly from the foundation of the Chinese empire in 221 BC until the fall of the Roman Empire under the barbarian invasions in 410 AD. Although our knowledge of the great empires is well established, there is still work to be done sorting out the tangled skein of the captivating history of the people of the steppes.
